What a replica Miu Miu Matelassé bag is
Miu Miu is a brand in the Prada Group. The Matelassé line uses quilted nappa leather with a raised, padded pattern. Retail prices in the US sit between about $2,000 and $3,500 for the leather models. A replica is a copy made in a factory with no license from Miu Miu. Sellers list them at $120 to $450.
Materials in the copies
Factories use three builds. The cheapest uses PU (polyurethane) over fabric. Mid-tier uses split-grain leather with a PU top coat. The top tier uses full-grain or lambskin with a matelassé stitch pattern.
- Stitch count: Genuine Matelassé quilting runs about 8 to 10 stitches per inch. Low-tier copies run 4 to 6.
- Hardware: Gold-tone plating on zinc alloy. Plating thickness on copies is 0.5 to 1 micron. It rubs off at the strap rings.
- Weight: A leather Matelassé shoulder bag weighs about 600 to 800 g. A PU copy weighs 300 to 450 g.
- Lining: Genuine bags use a satin or nappa lining. Copies use polyester twill.
Tell signs on a copy
- Logo lettering: the Miu Miu wordmark uses a serif face. Copies show uneven letter height and spacing.
- Interior stamp: heat-stamped logo on leather. Copies use ink print or a glued patch.
- Serial tag: a small white or cream tag inside the pocket. Copies often omit it.
- Dust bag: cotton or satin drawstring. Copies ship with a plain flannel sack.
- Smell: PU releases a solvent odor for weeks. Leather does not.
US law and shipping risk
19 U.S.C. § 1526(a) bars import of goods that carry a counterfeit trademark. The Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1114, covers infringement and sale. US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit shipments and destroys them. A seized parcel is not returned and the payment is not refunded by CBP. Selling a replica as a genuine bag is fraud under state law.
