Short answer

Most bags sold as Hermes python imitations use one of three materials: embossed cowhide, polyurethane fabric with a printed scale pattern, or real python skin built on a non-Hermes frame. Hermes uses python in its exotic leather line for Birkin and Kelly bags. The company does not sell skins or components to outside makers. A bag described as Hermes python outside an authorized boutique or a documented resale channel is an imitation or a counterfeit.

Two legal facts matter. Python skin trade is regulated under CITES. Goods carrying a counterfeit Hermes mark are illegal in the US under 18 U.S.C. 2320.

How to tell real python from embossed leather

  • Scale size varies. Real python scales change in size and shape from the belly to the spine. Embossed cowhide repeats the same scale at the same size across the panel.
  • Edges lift. A real scale sits on the surface and its free edge lifts with a fingernail. An embossed scale is pressed into the hide and stays flat.
  • Pores. Many python scales carry a small pore near the center. Embossed leather does not.
  • Seams. On printed fabric, the pattern runs across the seam line with no break and no change in direction. Real skins are cut so the grain follows the panel.
  • Back side. Real python has a soft, fibrous underside. Embossed leather shows the suede-like back of cowhide. PU shows a fabric backing.

CITES and python skin

Most python species sit in CITES Appendix II. Commercial trade is legal, but a shipment needs an export permit from the country of origin and an import permit from the destination country. In the US, the Fish and Wildlife Service inspects shipments and requires a CITES permit for python products. A bag made of real python skin with no paperwork can be seized at the border even when it carries no brand name. Hermes states that its exotic skins come from suppliers that hold the required permits.

US law on counterfeit bags

18 U.S.C. 2320 makes it a federal crime to traffic in goods that carry a counterfeit mark. Penalties reach 10 years in prison and a $2,000,000 fine for a person, or $5,000,000 for a company. The Lanham Act lets the trademark owner sue for statutory damages up to $2,000,000 per counterfeit mark per type of goods when the use is willful. Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy the goods. A first seizure of one bag for personal use ends with the item destroyed. Resale counts as trafficking.

Care differences

Real python dries out and scales lift at the edges. It needs conditioning and storage away from dry heat. Embossed cowhide takes standard leather care. PU print cracks at fold lines within a few years. None of these materials behaves like the Hermes skin, which is a matched pair of skins chosen for scale size and pattern continuity across the front, back, and flap.

What is not known

Hermes does not publish skin supplier names, tannery locations, or the number of python bags made each year. Resale prices for python Birkins and Kellys vary by size, year, and hardware, and no public price list exists. A site that quotes a fixed authentic price for a new python bag is guessing.
