Quick answer

Real Versace hardware is cast metal with deep engraving, a defined Medusa face, and plating that wears to a dull brass tone. Fake hardware shows shallow stamps, soft Medusa features, plastic or hollow parts, and gold that flakes off in sheets. Check four points: the Medusa relief, the metal weight, the engraving depth, and the screw heads. One flaw does not prove a bag is fake. Three or four flaws together do.

The Medusa head

Versace has used the Medusa head on bags, belts, and shoes since the 1990s. It appears on the La Medusa, Medusa Biggie, and Greca lines. On a real piece the snake strands are separate, each with a rounded tip. The eyes are recessed ovals. The nose bridge is a straight ridge, and the chin comes to a point.

On fakes the strands merge into one lump. The eyes are stamped flat. At arm's length the face reads as a blob with no chin line. Cast copies of the mold lose detail on each generation, so third and fourth copies look softer than the first.

Metal weight and finish

A genuine Medusa plaque feels dense in the hand. It is brass with gold-tone or palladium-tone plating. Fakes use zinc alloy, stamped steel, or plastic with vacuum metalizing. A plated plastic plaque weighs less than a solid brass plaque of the same size.

Wear tells you the base metal. Real plating rubs thin and shows dull brass. Fake plating lifts at the edges in bright yellow flakes and leaves grey or white plastic underneath.

Engraving and stamps

Genuine hardware carries a stamp: VERSACE, GIANNI VERSACE, or the line name. Every letter sits at the same depth, and the edges are square. Laser etching on fakes leaves rounded letter edges and uneven depth. On the Virtus line the Barocco V has engraved acanthus leaves. Fakes lose the leaf veining and the curves go flat.

Zippers and pulls

Versace sources zippers from Lampo, Riri, and YKK across different lines. The pull tab carries the brand mark. Teeth on a metal zip are uniform and the slider moves with no catch. Fakes ship with unmarked pulls, or a stamped VERSACE that sits off-center on the tab.

Fasteners

  • Rivets and screws sit flush with the leather.
  • Real screws are flat-head or hex, sized to the hardware plate.
  • Many fakes use Phillips-head screws. Versace bag hardware does not.
  • Stitching around a hardware plate runs 5 to 6 stitches per inch on a real bag.

What hardware does not tell you

Hardware is one check, not a verdict. Some sellers fit authentic pulls and plaques to fake bodies. Stitching, interior labels, date codes, and serial tags carry the rest of the weight. Versace does not publish alloy specs or plating thickness, so weight comparisons come from handling a known authentic bag of the same model.
