Why the resale value is near zero
Loewe is an LVMH brand. The house dates to 1846 in Madrid, and LVMH acquired it in 1996. The Puzzle bag launched in 2015 and carries most of the secondhand demand. Pre-owned Loewe prices hold because buyers pay for the leather, the stamping, and the brand record. A counterfeit carries none of those.
Authenticators reject the bag, so no platform passes it to a buyer. LVMH does not break out Loewe revenue or production figures, so no public number exists for the size of the counterfeit Loewe market.
Legal exposure
- 18 U.S.C. § 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods. A first offense carries up to 10 years; a second carries up to 20.
- The Lanham Act allows statutory damages of $1,000 to $200,000 per counterfeit mark per type of goods. A judge can raise that to $2,000,000 per mark when the use is willful.
- U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize shipments at the border.
A private sale adds risk rather than removing it. Mail across state lines creates federal jurisdiction.
What sellers try, and what follows
- List it as Loewe. The platform pulls the item and holds funds during review.
- List it as a replica. eBay and Poshmark both ban the item and the wording.
- Sell through a social app or a group chat. The buyer can still file a chargeback. The seller covers the loss plus shipping and the return.
Platform rules
eBay prohibits counterfeit items. The company removes listings, refunds the buyer, and can suspend the seller. eBay Authenticity Guarantee covers handbags above a set price, and a bag that fails inspection goes back to the seller.
Poshmark authenticates orders above $500. The RealReal and Vestiaire Collective run in-house authentication. A failed item is returned or destroyed, and the account can be closed.
How authentication catches a fake
Authenticators check stitching density, hardware weight, stamping depth, and interior labels. Loewe changes details each season, so counterfeiters copy a photo rather than a production run. Mismatched hardware tone and laser-cut edges show up often. For buyers, eBay's money-back guarantee covers items not as described, including counterfeits. Credit card chargebacks run 60 to 120 days at most US issuers. PayPal accepts disputes for 180 days.
