A fake Hermès Kelly 20 is a counterfeit copy of the Hermès Kelly Mini, a 20 cm handbag made in France. The bags sold under that name are not made or sold by Hermès. U.S. law bans their import and sale, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize them at the border.
What the real Kelly 20 is
The Kelly is one of two signature Hermès handbags, along with the Birkin. The mini version measures about 20 cm across, 11 cm high, and 6 cm deep. Hermès sells it in leathers such as Epsom and Chèvre, and in exotic skins. The bag is hand stitched and carries a date stamp and a craftsman mark inside.
Hermès does not post Kelly prices on its website. Reported boutique prices for a Kelly 20 in 2024 and 2025 ran from $9,000 to $11,000. Resale prices on the open market often land above $25,000 for new or unused examples. Hermès controls supply, so a walk-in customer at a boutique may not be offered one at all.
Legal status in the United States
- 18 U.S.C. § 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal crime. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison.
- CBP treats counterfeits as prohibited merchandise. The personal exemption for travelers does not cover counterfeit items. Agents may seize and destroy the goods.
- Counterfeit sales also bring civil claims under the Lanham Act, which lets the trademark owner seek damages and attorney fees.
- Payment for counterfeit goods can be reversed, and accounts tied to repeat purchases have been closed.
How buyers end up with a fake
Search listings for a "Kelly 20 replica" come from three groups: overseas factories, resellers who take orders on social media, and scammers who ship nothing. Price is the first signal. A real Kelly 20 costs five figures. Any listing at $200 to $1,500 is counterfeit or fraudulent.
Detail checking is unreliable. Stitching density, hardware weight, blind stamps, and the orange box are all copied. Hermès does not run a public authentication service, and third-party authenticators are independent businesses. Their opinions do not bind Hermès.
Consumer and safety risks
- No recourse if the bag is seized, wrong, or missing.
- Tests by U.S. and EU agencies have found lead, arsenic, and phthalates in counterfeit goods, including handbags and jewelry.
- Counterfeit goods carry no resale value. Auction houses and resale platforms reject them.
- Customs records follow the shipment. Repeat importers face higher penalties.
Size of the counterfeit trade
The OECD and EUIPO estimate trade in counterfeit goods at about 2.3 percent of world imports, or about $467 billion in 2021. Clothing, footwear, and leather goods are among the most copied categories.
What to buy instead
Pre-owned Kelly bags from licensed resellers come with a receipt and a condition report. New bags from brands that sell direct come with a warranty. Both hold resale value. A counterfeit holds neither.
