A fake Hermès Jypsière GM is a counterfeit copy of an Hermès shoulder bag that Hermès introduced around 2010 and later pulled from its regular line. The GM is the largest of the three sizes. What the Hermès Jypsière GM is
The Jypsière is a flap bag with a long shoulder strap. It was designed during Jean-Paul Gaultier's time as creative director at Hermès, 2003 to 2010. The bag has a front flap, a leather strap that passes through a metal loop, a back pocket, and a strap with a slider.
Hermès made the Jypsière in PM, MM, and GM. Published dimensions for the GM sit near 34 cm wide, 30 cm tall, and 12 cm deep. Hermès has no public spec sheet, so numbers differ by year and leather.
Leathers used include Swift, Togo, Clemence, Evercolor, and Barenia. Hardware is palladium plated or gold plated. Retail price for the GM was in the high four figures in its final years. The model left the regular line in the late 2010s. Hermès has not confirmed a date.
Counterfeit tells
- Stitching. Hermès uses saddle stitching, two needles and linen thread. Copies use machine stitching with flat, even stitches.
- Edge paint. Original edges carry thin coats of paint. Copies show thick, uneven paint that cracks.
- Hardware. Real palladium hardware has weight and a matte face. Copies use light, bright plated metal.
- Blind stamp. Each Hermès bag carries a blind stamp with a year code and an artisan number. One copied code shows up across many counterfeit bags.
- Grain. Togo and Clemence have a natural, uneven grain. Copies show a stamped, repeating pattern.
- Strap and loop. The leather strap on a real Jypsière passes through the loop with room to spare. On copies the strap is thin and the loop is oversized.
Legal status in the US
18 U.S.C. § 2320 sets a first-offense penalty of up to 10 years in prison for trafficking in counterfeit goods, and up to 20 years for a second offense. The Lanham Act gives Hermès a civil route to damages and to seizure of the goods. CBP seizes counterfeit handbags at ports of entry. A single bag in a suitcase carries the same legal status as a shipment.
Authentication limits
Hermès does not authenticate bags for buyers. The company runs a repair and spa service. A bag that is not authentic comes back without service, and Hermès does not issue a letter about the reason. Third-party authenticators work from photos or in-hand review. None of them guarantee a result, and a counterfeit that passes one check can fail another.
Resale risk
Sellers on US marketplaces list Jypsière bags with receipts and box photos. Receipts and boxes are copied at the same factories as the bags. Buyers who resell a counterfeit bag can face the same federal charges as the importer.
