Short answer
A fake Hermes Birkin in green is a counterfeit bag that copies a Hermes trademark and a Hermes color. Selling one in the United States is a federal crime. Importing one is barred by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Hermes green shades such as Bamboo, Vert Anis, and Vert Rousseau belong to specific leather batches. A counterfeit does not match the leather, the stitching, or the stamp.
Green in the Hermes color range
Hermes has released green tones under names that include Bamboo, Vert Anis, Vert Rousseau, Vert Cypress, Vert Bosphore, Menthe, and Vert Jade. Each name maps to a dye lot and a leather type. A Birkin 25 in Togo is not the same green as a Birkin 25 in Epsom, even under one color name. Green Birkins show up in the resale market less than black, gold, or etoupe.
What the law says
Under 18 U.S.C. 2320, trafficking in counterfeit goods carries up to 10 years in prison for a first offense and up to 20 years for a repeat offense. CBP can seize and destroy shipments of counterfeit bags at the border. CBP reported 19,724 intellectual property seizure shipments in fiscal year 2023, with a manufacturer's suggested retail value of $2.7 billion. The OECD put the global trade in counterfeit and pirated goods at 2.5 percent of world trade, or $461 billion, in a 2016 estimate.
Inspection points on a green bag
- Stitching: Hermes uses a saddle stitch with two needles. Stitch count runs about 8 to 9 per inch on the front panel.
- Stamp: the blind stamp and the craftsman stamp sit in fixed spots. The letters and numbers must match the year and the artisan.
- Leather grain: Togo has a pebbled grain. Epsom has a cross-hatch embossed grain. Green dye sits even on both, with no pooling at the seams.
- Hardware: palladium or gold plating, no flaking, weight in the hand.
- Smell: Hermes leather smells like tanned hide. Counterfeits can smell like glue or plastic.
Price context
Hermes does not publish Birkin prices. A new Birkin 25 in Togo runs about $11,000 to $12,000 at a US boutique when a store offers one. Resale prices for green Birkins run from $15,000 to $60,000, based on size, leather, hardware, and color rarity. Listings at $300 to $1,500 are counterfeits.
What to do
Ask for the receipt, the box, the rain cover, and the clochette. Compare the blind stamp against Hermes records. Pay for an authentication service that handles Hermes. Report counterfeit sellers to CBP or the Hermes legal team. A counterfeit bag carries risk: no warranty, no repairs from Hermes, and possible seizure at the border.
