What Material Is a Fake Givenchy Bag Made Of?
Most fakes use polyurethane (PU) leather, PVC, split-grain leather with a plastic top coat, or bonded leather. Genuine Givenchy bags use calfskin, lambskin, goat leather, or jacquard cotton canvas. The material grade follows the price. A counterfeit Antigona runs $40 to $300. A real calfskin Antigona starts near $2,000. No public data exists on the share of the market in each material class.
PU Leather
PU leather is a knit or woven backing with a polyurethane film on top. The film measures 0.2 mm to 0.5 mm. It has no grain structure. A stamping plate embosses the pebbled finish of Givenchy calfskin onto the film. The pebble pattern repeats in the same spot in the same direction across a panel. Real leather has pores in irregular places.
PU does not recover. A fold line in a PU bag cracks or holds the crease. Press a fingernail into the surface near a seam. Leather springs back. PU keeps the dent.
PVC and Vinyl
PVC uses plasticizers that smell like a shower curtain or solvent glue. The smell fades in weeks and returns when the bag sits in a hot car. PVC panels weigh less than leather panels of the same size. Edges on a PVC bag are folded and glued, not painted and burnished.
Split-Grain and Bonded Leather
Split-grain is the lower layer of a hide after the top grain is shaved off and sold. It is real leather with a plastic top coat and an embossed pattern. Sellers use the term because the word leather appears on the tag. Bonded leather is scrap leather fiber glued to a backing sheet. The leather content can fall under 20 percent of the panel weight.
Lining
Genuine Antigona and Pandora bags use suede or cotton twill lining matched to the shell color. Most fakes use polyester satin, nylon, or unbranded microfiber suede. Check the interior seam allowance. A ragged edge of 3 mm to 5 mm shows on most replicas. Genuine interiors have a clean bound edge.
Hardware
Givenchy uses solid brass with palladium plating on most hardware. Replicas use zinc alloy with chrome or gold electroplate. Zinc alloy weighs less and pits. Brass and zinc alloy are both non-magnetic, so a magnet tells you nothing. Use weight. A genuine zipper pull feels heavy for its size. Plating on a replica flakes at the corners within months and shows gray metal under the gold.
How to Check a Bag in Hand
- Press the surface. Leather springs back. PU holds the mark.
- Look at the grain. A pattern that repeats across panels came from a stamp.
- Check the edge. Painted and burnished edges point to leather. Folded and glued edges point to a copy.
- Read the label. Genuine leather and bonded leather are legal terms, not grade terms. Bonded can cover glued scrap.
- Weigh the bag. Compare it to the weight listed on a reseller page.
- Smell the interior. Leather smells of tannins. PU smells of solvent.
What Material Does Not Tell You
Material grade is separate from logo accuracy. A high-tier copy can use full-grain leather and still fail on stitch count, date code format, and hardware engraving. Some Givenchy styles are not leather at all. The 4G jacquard line uses coated cotton canvas, so a canvas fake matches the material and fails on construction. If a seller does not name the tannery or the leather type, treat the bag as a copy.
Legal Status
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $250,000 for an individual. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit shipments at the border and destroys them. A buyer can lose both the item and the money. The FTC Leather Guides cover material labels, so a seller who marks PU as leather breaks a second rule.
