Most fake Fendi bags are made from polyurethane (PU) coated fabric, PVC-backed canvas, or split leather that has been shaved thin and glued to a plastic backing. Real Fendi uses coated jacquard FF canvas, full-grain calfskin, lambskin, and Romano leather from its Selleria line. If the surface feels slick and rubbery, smells like vinyl or glue, and shows a woven fabric backing when you pull the lining away from a seam, you are holding a synthetic, not leather.
Materials used in counterfeit Fendi bags
- PU leather: a fabric base coated with polyurethane. It creases in sharp folds rather than softening with use.
- PVC-coated canvas: a cheap cotton or polyester weave sealed with polyvinyl chloride. It stays stiff in cold weather and gets tacky in heat.
- Bonded split leather: real leather shavings mixed with binder and pressed into sheets. It has no fiber structure and peels at cut edges.
- Split-grain leather with a PU topcoat: the weak inner layer of a hide, shaved and painted to imitate grain. The coating cracks before the leather does.
- Printed jacquard canvas: polyester woven with the FF pattern printed on top instead of woven into the cloth. The pattern sits on the surface and fades at fold lines.
- Nylon twill: light woven fabric used on fake Baguettes. It puddles around the base instead of holding a shape.
How to identify the material in six steps
Work through these in order. Stop as soon as you get a clear answer.
- Pull the lining away from an inside seam and look at the exposed edge with a phone flashlight. A woven or knit backing means synthetic.
- Press a thumbnail into the surface and release. Leather springs back with fine grain lines. PU holds the dent or shows a smooth rubbery crater.
- Smell the inside of the bag close to the seam. Leather smells faintly animal. Counterfeits smell like plastic, glue, or new shower curtain.
- Rub a damp white cloth across a hidden corner for ten seconds. Cheap topcoats and printed canvas release color onto the cloth.
- Fold the strap sharply and check the crease. Synthetic coatings turn white or crack along the fold line.
- Weigh the bag in your hand. A counterfeit Fendi of a given size is usually lighter than the leather original and heavier than a true canvas one.
Material by Fendi line
Baguette
Genuine versions come in coated FF jacquard, nappa leather, and shearling. Counterfeits mostly use printed polyester canvas with a thin PVC layer.
Peekaboo
The original is calfskin or Selleria Romano leather with visible hand stitching. Fakes rely on PU over a fabric base, and the stitching is machine straight.
FF canvas styles
Real FF canvas has the logo woven into the structure of the cloth. On fakes the logo is printed, so the reverse side of the fabric is blank white or grey.
Red flags in material descriptions
- The listing says "premium leather" or "Italian leather" with no animal named.
- Photos never show an interior seam, edge paint, or the underside of a strap.
- The seller claims "same materials as the original" without stating a tannery or material name.
- The price sits far below resale value for the same model in the same material.
If you were sold a fake
- Save the listing, photos, and payment receipt before the seller removes anything.
- Open a dispute with your payment provider and cite the material mismatch, not the authenticity claim alone.
- Report the seller to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and to the trademark owner's anti-counterfeiting contact.
Material is the fastest test you have. Grain structure, smell, and the raw edge at a seam cannot be faked at a low price point, and they survive a two-minute inspection in any parking lot or resale counter.
