The short answer
Most fake Fendi bags are built from synthetic material. The three common ones are PU (polyurethane) coated fabric, PVC (polyvinyl chloride), and split leather with a plastic top coat. Full-grain cowhide shows up in a small share of high-priced replicas. Fendi uses calf leather, jacquard canvas, and coated canvas on its own bags.
Material list and what each one does
- PU coated fabric. A knit or woven backing with a polyurethane film on top. Wholesale price runs $2 to $5 per square meter. The film holds a printed FF pattern well. It cracks at fold points after 6 to 12 months of daily use.
- PVC. A vinyl sheet on a fabric backing. Cost is $1 to $3 per square meter. It weighs more than PU and feels stiffer. It does not absorb moisture, so it wipes clean. Old PVC turns yellow.
- Split leather with PU top coat. The lower layer of a hide, sanded flat and coated. Sellers may stamp it "genuine leather." That term does not mean full grain. The top coat peels in sheets.
- Microfiber synthetic leather. Polyester or nylon fibers bonded with resin. Thickness runs 0.6 mm to 1.2 mm. It takes a grain emboss. It behaves like leather in photos and unlike leather in the hand.
- Full-grain leather. The top layer of the hide with the grain intact. Thickness runs 1.2 mm to 2.0 mm. A small number of high-tier replicas use it. Cost is $8 to $20 per square meter.
Hardware and lining
Replica hardware is zinc alloy with electroplating. Plating thickness runs 0.5 to 2 microns. The plating wears through at the strap rings and the clasp nose. Fendi uses brass on several models, and brass weighs more and holds plating longer. Replica linings are polyester satin at 70 to 90 gsm. Authentic linings sit heavier and crease with a fold, not a wrinkle.
Checks you can do by hand
- Smell. PU and PVC carry a solvent odor. It fades in 1 to 3 weeks, or it stays if the bag sits in a closet. Leather smells like leather.
- Weight. A PU replica of a medium shoulder bag weighs 0.8 kg to 1.2 kg. The same bag in calf leather weighs 1.3 kg to 1.8 kg.
- Stitch count. Replica seams run 4 to 6 stitches per inch. Fendi seams run 8 to 10.
- Cut edge. Look at an unsealed strap edge. Fiber layers point to synthetic material or split leather. A solid edge points to full grain.
- Grain repeat. Embossed grain stamps the same pattern at the same spacing. Real grain does not repeat on a grid.
What is not public
Factory material sheets and supplier lists for replica bags are not published. The figures above come from wholesale material listings and from tear-down reports on resale forums. Treat them as ranges, not specifications.
