Fake Dior hardware is plated zinc alloy or steel, not solid brass. It feels light in the hand, the plating flakes at the edges, and the engraved logo is shallow with a soft wall. Genuine Dior hardware uses brass as the base metal with a palladium or gold-tone finish, and the engraving cuts deep with crisp edges.

What real Dior hardware is made of

Dior uses brass for the metal parts on its leather goods. The finish is palladium for a silver tone, or gold tone for yellow metal, applied over the brass. The parts carry weight. A D-ring on a Lady Dior feels dense for its size.

The Lady Dior carries four separate letter charms that spell D, I, O, R. Each charm hangs on its own ring. The 30 Montaigne uses a CD clasp. The Saddle bag uses a D stirrup at the front flap.

Engraving on authentic parts has a matte recess and a polished top surface. Letters match in height and spacing, and the font matches the Dior wordmark used on packaging and labels.

Counterfeit tells to check

  • Weight: fake hardware is much lighter than brass of the same size.
  • Magnets: a magnet snaps to plated steel hardware. Brass does not pull a magnet in the same way.
  • Engraving: shallow, blurred, or filled with black paint to hide depth problems.
  • Plating: flakes off in sheets at corners. The base metal under the flake is gray or yellow-white.
  • Letters: wrong stroke width, uneven gaps, or serifs that are too round.
  • Rings and clips: casting seams or a rough texture inside the curve.
  • Feet and studs: hollow, thin, or stamped from sheet metal instead of cast.
  • Screws: mixed head types, or slots that sit off-center.

Checks you can run at home

  1. Hold the bag by the handle. Compare the metal ring to the rest of the bag. If the metal feels lighter than the leather, stop there.
  2. Bring a magnet near the ring and the clasp. Keep the magnet off the leather.
  3. Use a 10x loupe on the engraving. Look at the wall of the letter, not the top. A cut wall is uniform. An etched wall is rough.
  4. Rub a cotton swab on the inside of a D-ring where the plating ends. Green or copper residue on a new bag points to a plating failure.
  5. Check the finish color in daylight, not store light. Palladium reads light gray. Fake silver plating reads blue or cream.

Serial codes and interior tags

Dior puts a date code on a leather tab inside the bag. The format changed over the years. The code is a production reference, not a serial number tied to one bag. Counterfeiters copy old codes onto new bags, so a code that matches the model is a weak signal on its own.

Check the heat stamp inside. Letters are pressed into the leather with a hot die. Real stamps sit level and even. Fake stamps sit high, uneven, or too deep. Dior does not publish a public authentication service on its site.

Zippers and pulls

Real Dior zipper pulls are cast metal with a smooth back. Counterfeit pulls are stamped from sheet metal and feel thin at the edge. Teeth on some fakes are plated plastic. Tap them with a fingernail. A dull click points to plastic. A light ring points to metal.

Legal note in the US

Counterfeit goods are illegal to import and to sell in the United States. 18 U.S.C. 2320 sets criminal penalties for trafficking in counterfeit goods. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes shipments of counterfeit bags and destroys them. Dior does not sell through unauthorized dealers, so a new bag from a resale site carries risk.

Short answer list

Real: brass base, palladium or gold-tone finish, dense weight, deep engraving, four separate letter charms on the Lady Dior, cast zipper pulls.

Fake: zinc or steel base, light weight, shallow engraving, flaking plating, stamped pulls, copied date codes.
