Short answer

A fake Dior bag is not a collectible. Auction houses, resale platforms, and authentication firms reject counterfeit goods. US law bars the import and sale of counterfeit items. Counterfeit Dior bags sell for $30 to $150 in street markets. Authentic Lady Dior bags carry US retail prices above $5,000, and used examples sell near or below that figure based on size, leather, and year.

What gives a handbag collector value

Four factors set prices on the secondary market:

  • Authenticity records. Serial numbers, receipts, and brand archive entries.
  • Production volume. Limited runs and discontinued colorways.
  • Provenance. Owner history, runway use, or archive photos.
  • Condition. Original hardware, original stitching, no repaint.

A counterfeit fails all four. No brand record exists. Production volume is unknown. Provenance is absent. Brand repair services decline counterfeit items because replacement parts come from the brand.

Dior models and resale prices

Lady Dior, Saddle, and Book Tote make up most of the resale volume. Lady Dior holds value best of the three. The Saddle rose in 2018 and 2019 after a revival, then cooled. Book Tote values drop with wear at the corners. Numbered editions and collaborations can sell above retail. A standard black leather Lady Dior in used condition sells below retail in most listings. Rarity sets the price, not the logo.

Legal status in the United States

Trademark counterfeiting is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. Selling a counterfeit bag as authentic adds fraud exposure. US Customs and Border Protection seized 19,724 shipments of counterfeit goods in fiscal year 2023. CBP put the estimated manufacturer suggested retail value at $2.7 billion. Handbags and wallets rank among the top seized categories. CBP can seize, forfeit, and destroy counterfeit goods, and it can assess fines on importers.

Platform rules

eBay, Poshmark, and The RealReal prohibit counterfeit listings. The RealReal authenticates items before listing. eBay removes listings after complaints from rights holders and can suspend accounts. Payment processors list counterfeits as a prohibited category. Those rules remove the sales channel that gives collectibles their prices.

How to check a Dior bag

  1. Read the interior leather tag. It carries the Dior logo and a date code.
  2. Compare the date code format to known examples from the same model year. Formats changed over time.
  3. Inspect hardware engraving. Letter shape and depth stay the same across a model line.
  4. Check stitch spacing along the flap and handles. Uneven spacing points to a counterfeit.
  5. Compare dust bag, box, and card print quality to an item from a boutique.

Paid authentication services charge $10 to $50 for a written opinion. Dior runs after-sales repair for authentic items and can refuse items that fail inspection. I could not verify that Dior issues written authentication letters to buyers.

If you own a counterfeit

Resale is closed. eBay, Poshmark, and The RealReal block the listing. Consignment shops refuse the item. Donation is the remaining option in most cases. The resale value is $0.
