Start With the Quilting

The quilting is the fastest tell on a Chanel Classic Flap. The diamond pattern, the stitch count, and the alignment all have to agree across three separate panels: the flap, the front body, and the back pocket. Many replicas buy good leather and still miss the stitch rhythm, or let the diagonal lines drift where the flap meets the body. Judge the quilting first, then move to hardware, lining, and the serial plate. That order keeps you from being distracted by a soft lambskin feel before you have checked the geometry.

Prerequisites

  • Bright, raking light, ideally a window at a low angle
  • A 10x loupe or a phone camera with macro mode
  • Two or three photos of a known authentic Classic Flap for side-by-side reference
  • A soft tape measure
  • Agreement in writing that the bag can be returned

Step-by-Step Inspection

  1. Lay the bag flat on a neutral surface and close the flap.
  2. Photograph the full front of the bag straight on, so the quilt grid fills the frame.
  3. Count the stitches along one side of a single quilted diamond and write the number down.
  4. Repeat the count on four more diamonds spread across the flap and the body.
  5. Compare the five counts. A spread of more than one stitch per side is a warning sign.
  6. Trace one diagonal quilt line from the flap down across the seam onto the body.
  7. Check whether the two segments meet in a straight continuation or jog sideways at the seam.
  8. Find the center diamond on the flap and confirm that its point sits directly under the middle of the CC turnlock.
  9. Turn the bag over and check that the back pocket quilt is centered on the pocket panel, not the bag body.
  10. Look at the thread under the loupe. It should be thin, close to the leather color, and slightly recessed into the leather.
  11. Press a fingertip into a quilt valley and a quilt peak. The height difference should be gentle, not ballooned.
  12. Open the flap and check the interior lining color and the stitched pocket edge.
  13. Examine the CC turnlock engraving with the loupe and check the screws on the back plate.
  14. Look for the serial plate or chip in the lower interior corner and read the characters.
  15. Run the chain through your hand and check that the leather strip is woven through every link without gaps.

Quilt Benchmarks to Compare Against

  • Stitch count is consistent across the whole bag, not just on the most visible panel
  • Diagonal lines run unbroken from flap to body when the bag is closed
  • Diamond points align with the turnlock, the flap corners, and the pocket edges
  • Thread matches the leather tone and sits flush with the surface
  • Quilting has a low, even loft rather than a deep pillow effect

Quilting Faults That Show Up Most on Replicas

Over-puffed diamonds are the most common error. Heavy filling reads as volume in photos but flattens the leather grain and pushes the stitching out of the surface. Thick contrast thread is the second. Authentic bags use a fine thread that nearly disappears into the leather, while many replicas use a heavier thread that highlights the pattern and makes the stitch length look uneven.

The third fault is drift at the flap seam. Cut the flap and the front body as separate panels and the diagonals will not line up, which is why this check exposes so many bags. The fourth is a back pocket quilt that follows the bag body instead of the pocket panel, so the diamond point sits off center.

Checks Beyond the Quilting

  • Turnlock engraving sharpness and screw head type on the back plate
  • Serial plate or chip format and placement in the interior corner
  • Interior pocket edge stitching and the lipstick slot
  • Chain weight, link shape, and leather weave
  • Grommet finish where the chain exits the body

Record and Decide

Save your photos and stitch counts before you commit. If the quilt lines break at the seam, if the counts swing by two or more stitches, or if the thread sits proud of the leather, treat the bag as a replica and price it accordingly. If you are buying secondhand at an authentic price, take the bag to a professional authentication service before payment clears. Keep the return agreement and the seller correspondence on file until the bag has been checked in person.
