Short answer

Most Chanel Classic Flap bags listed as crocodile are embossed calfskin, not crocodile. Chanel said in December 2018 it would stop using exotic skins. A Flap made after that date with a crocodile label did not leave Chanel with real crocodile leather.

What the word means in a listing

Two products share the term. One is farmed crocodile skin, tanned and dyed. The other is calfskin pressed with a scale pattern. The second costs a fraction of the first. It shows up on replica listings and on some resale listings.

Chanel and exotic skins before 2019

Chanel used crocodile and alligator on the Classic Flap in small runs. Those bags came with CITES documents and a price above calfskin. Chanel also used embossed calfskin on seasonal flaps that copied the exotic look.

Real crocodile vs embossed calfskin

  • Pores: crocodile has a pore dot inside each scale. Embossed calfskin has none.
  • Scale size: crocodile scales change size across the panel, small near the belly fold and large along the spine. Embossed calfskin repeats one scale size.
  • Pattern break: embossed leather repeats at a fixed interval. Two panels cut from one hide show identical scale groups.
  • Wear: crocodile scales lift and soften at the corners. Embossed calfskin scuffs and shows the base grain.
  • Alligator: no pores, square scales, a raised ridge along the center line. Alligator is not crocodile, and sellers mix the two words.

Paperwork check

Crocodile skin crosses borders under CITES permits. A seller with real crocodile holds an export permit and a re-export certificate. A bag with no permit cannot ship between countries. Ask for the permit number and the species name printed on the document.

Checks that apply to any Classic Flap

  1. Serial: hologram stickers carry 7 or 8 digits. From 2021 Chanel uses an RFID chip in the lining.
  2. Stitch count: about 10 to 12 stitches per inch on the flap edge.
  3. Quilting: diamond points line up across the flap, the gusset, and the back pocket.
  4. Turnlock: the CHANEL stamp sits centered on the lock plate with even stroke width.
  5. Hardware weight: the chain and grommets carry heft. Light, hollow hardware is a replica sign.

Price signals

A crocodile flap sells above a calfskin flap of the same size. A "crocodile" flap listed near calfskin prices points to embossed leather. The same photo on several listings points to a stock image.

What stays unknown

Photos cannot confirm species. A tannery stamp, a CITES document, and a hands-on look at the pores settle it.
