Short answer

Fake Burberry bags use coated split leather, bonded leather, or PVC with a printed grain. Burberry leather goods are made in Italy from full grain or top grain calf leather. A fake shows a grain that repeats every 2 cm to 4 cm, a glue or vinyl smell, and edge paint that sits thick and uneven.

What fake Burberry leather is made of

Most counterfeits fall into three groups. Coated split leather has a polyurethane film pressed with a grain that repeats across the panel. Bonded leather is shredded leather fiber glued to a backing sheet. PVC and polyurethane fabric go into the cheapest bags. None of the three holds shape. None builds the patina that calf leather shows after a year.

Burberry leather goods are tanned in Italy. The grain is not uniform. Pores sit at random and the surface has small scars and variation from panel to panel.

Signs on the surface

Run a fingertip across the panel. Full grain leather feels like skin and warms under the hand. Coated split leather feels like a warm plastic sheet. Look at a strap that folds open. Real leather shows a suede nap on the back. Bonded leather shows fabric fibers or a woven mesh. Smell the bag. Calf leather has a mild tanned smell. Split leather with a coating smells like glue or vinyl.

Hardware and stitching

Burberry hardware has more mass than the copies. Real clasps carry machine engraving with sharp edges. Fake clasps show shallow stamped lettering and plating that flakes at the corners. Count the stitches along the top edge. Real Burberry bags run about 8 to 10 stitches per inch, and the line stays straight. On fakes the stitch line drifts and the thread looks fuzzy. Check inside the seam. Fakes glue the lining to the shell. Real bags stitch the lining to the shell.

Stamps, codes, and labels

Burberry does not publish a full list of authentication marks. The interior stamp carries the brand name, and the bag has a Made in Italy stamp. Serial numbers appear on many models. Fakes skip the number, print it in a different typeface, or repeat one number across hundreds of bags. Look at letter spacing. Real stamps have even spacing and clean letterforms.

Check pattern alignment

Burberry check runs beige with black, white, and red lines. The plaid aligns across seams. At a side seam the lines meet and continue. On fakes the lines stop and restart at the seam. Cheap copies also shrink the scale of the check.

Tests that damage nothing

  • Press the leather with a thumbnail. Real leather lifts, springs back, and keeps fine lines. Coated split leather returns with a white crease.
  • Wipe a hidden spot with a damp white cloth. Cheap dye on bonded leather transfers color to the cloth.
  • Ask the seller for a photo of the back side of the leather. Most sellers with a real bag send it.

Limits of a home check

Burberry leather goods change from season to season. A bag can pass every test above and still be counterfeit. A professional authentication service or a Burberry store is the final check. Counterfeit apparel and leather goods remain a top category in customs seizures in the US and the EU. Price is the main signal. New Burberry leather bags retail from about $1,200 to $3,500, and no authorized store sells that stock at 80 percent off.
