Bottega Veneta does not make replica bags. A listing that says 'limited edition fake' is selling a counterfeit, not a product line from the house. In the United States, trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2,000,000 fine. Buyers risk seizure of the item and civil claims under the Lanham Act.
What limited edition means at Bottega Veneta
Bottega Veneta ships seasonal collections and a small number of capsule drops. The house does not publish edition sizes for most items. Colors, leathers, and hardware change each season. A seller can label any past-season color 'limited' because that color stopped shipping.
Bottega Veneta added the Certificate of Craft in 2022. The card covers repair service for the life of the bag and stays with the piece. Counterfeit bags do not carry it.
How counterfeit listings use the phrase
- Scarcity numbers. Listings print '1 of 50' or '20 made.' Bottega does not number standard production bags.
- Price gap. A new Jodie or Cassette retails in the four-figure range. Listings at $120 to $400 are counterfeits.
- Keyword stacks. 'Fake,' 'replica,' '1:1,' 'mirror,' and 'limited edition' sit in the same title.
- Borrowed photos. Product images come from runway coverage, press kits, or other sellers.
Legal exposure for sellers and buyers
- 18 U.S.C. § 2320: up to 10 years and a $2,000,000 fine for a first trafficking offense, up to 20 years and $5,000,000 for a second.
- 15 U.S.C. § 1117(c): statutory damages up to $2,000,000 per counterfeit mark per type of goods when the use is willful.
- 19 U.S.C. § 1526: importation of goods bearing a counterfeit mark is prohibited.
- CBP and ICE seize shipments. CBP reported about 20,000 intellectual property seizures in recent fiscal years. A single counterfeit item can be seized in a personal shipment or in baggage.
Checklist before a resale purchase
- Ask for the Certificate of Craft and the original receipt.
- Match the style code to the season it belongs to.
- Inspect the intrecciato weave. Hand-woven leather shows uneven edges at the weave points. Stamped panels repeat on a fixed grid.
- Read the interior tag. Bottega prints the style code, the size, and the Made in Italy line.
- Pay a third-party authenticator for a written opinion. Keep the report.
