A fake Balenciaga bag strap fails on four checks: strap width, hardware weight, engraving depth, and stitch count. Counterfeit straps copy product photos. They match the look. They miss the numbers. Use a ruler and a 0.1 g scale, then compare your results to a bag you know is real.
1. Measure the strap width and length
Balenciaga does not publish strap dimensions. Model lines differ, and so do seasons. The City and Classic shoulder straps are narrower than the wide Le Cagole strap. With no reference bag on hand, ask the seller for the width in millimeters and the length from the first hole to the strap tip. A seller who will not measure is a seller to skip.
- Measure the width at three points. A strap that narrows in the middle was cut from a stretched hide.

3. Read the engraving with a 10x loupe
Real engraving cuts into the metal at a constant depth. The letters show a polished floor and sharp edges. Counterfeit engraving burns the surface, so it looks gray and flat. Check the letter G in the wordmark. Balenciaga uses a narrow sans serif. Fake stamping spreads the letters and thickens the strokes.
4. Count stitches in 25 mm
Pick a straight run on the strap. Count the stitches in 25 mm (1 inch). Count the next 25 mm. The two counts should match. A drop of one or two stitches signals a machine that slipped or a strap assembled from offcuts. Look at thread color and seam angle as well. Replica straps often use a thread one shade off.
5. Check model-specific parts
- Le Cagole: wide croc-embossed strap, aged brass studs, detachable buckles, mirror and pouch. Count the studs. Fake sets add or drop a row.
- Hourglass: chain strap on a curved base. Weigh the chain. Counterfeit links are hollow.
- City and Classic: braided leather zipper pulls. Zipper brand varies by season, so check the pull stamp against the year of the bag.
What listing language tells you
Terms like "1:1", "mirror quality", "same factory", and "AA grade" are seller slang. No grading body sets those labels. A listing with these terms has no authentication path, no repair path, and no return path to a brand boutique.
Legal risk in the US
Importing goods that carry a counterfeit trademark is prohibited in the United States. U.S. Customs and Border Protection targets shipments of counterfeit apparel and accessories, and personal use does not remove the risk of seizure. Seized goods are destroyed. The buyer carries the loss.
What is not public
No public list gives strap dimensions for every Balenciaga model and year, and Balenciaga changes hardware finishes by season. Any guide that quotes one exact number is guessing. Use the four checks against a reference bag, or pay a third-party authentication service that photographs hardware under a microscope.
